Why do we date?

Recently, I created a poll and had my classmates answer the question 'why do you date?'. The outcome was not surprising, most of the students said they dated for socialization and fun. The other popular choices were 'to get layed' and 'to prepare for marriage'. As I predicted, the 'to get layed' answer was chosen by all male and the 'to prepare for marriage' was mostly girl with the exception of a few boys. The outcome of this poll made me wonder 'does our view of relationships change as we become older? Or is it always consistent?'.  At first I thought, sure it does but then I took into account of the 40 year old man who still to this day is considered a 'player'. So some people never change, but then again this is not very common.
As I become older, I start to realize that I do not want to mess around anymore. I am looking for someone who will be my life partner. But does this mind set differentiate between sexes? You would like to think no but the reality is that the majority of guys between the ages of 15-25 are plainly looking for sex.
As I grow deeper in my blog I start to realize that maybe were moving to fast to become older and to have relationships. But young adults are still trying to figure out who they are , and how could we give someone our other half when we haven't even figured out who exactly we are?
